People often pretend to be something or someone they aren’t. Often in social situations, people act differently than they do with their close friends and family.
This is one of the reasons I like the DISC assessment (and other personality assessments) because they share results through a Natural and Adaptive style perspective.
However, it’s important to stay true to who you are, i.e., to be your authentic self.
It’s natural that people want to be accepted but the key to staying true to yourself is not worrying too much, or at all, about what others think or believe.
Think of yourself as a small child similar to the picture above. As smaller children, we don’t give the time of day to worry and concern to being anything BUT ourselves. Something to think about…
People should accept you for who you are. Don’t waste your time on people who don’t.
I like what my Pastor said in a recent message. If someone tries to serve up trash, no matter the environment, take it out and dump it. Just like we do with our kitchen trash, we take it out. We don’t dare let it sit longer than it needs to. Do the same with the garbage that news, critics, or negativity try to put in your lap.
To help you with this (and me too), I am going to serve you with 6 tips over the next so many days to help you be yourself!
Tip #1 – You can’t live up to the person you are pretending to be.
If you aren’t being your authentic self, you will falter at some point. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Did you ever notice that people who lie, often tell a different story later? This is because they won’t remember what the story was in the past and have no choice but to make up new details. If you are pretending to be someone you are not, this is essentially the same as lying.
Tomorrow, we will tackle Tip #2!
